公元18世纪日本战国时期，群藩割据，武士原井三郎（三船敏郎 饰）一家为自家藩主效忠多年，战功显赫，备受藩主大名器重。原井长子裕五郎正当壮年，准备继承父业，然不料藩主突然赐婚裕五郎，女方却是藩主的前夫人伊（司叶子 饰），伊因不满藩主荒淫生活愤然殴打藩主而被休黜。原井一家念及藩主恩遇勉为其难接受这桩婚事。婚后，裕五郎看妻子贤淑善良，夫妻感情甚好。原井三郎也辞官养老，裕五郎子承父业……一年后裕五郎夫妇得一女儿名富，此时藩主所立藩储却因病夭亡，藩主遂立伊所生之子为储，并令裕五郎与伊解除婚约，送伊回藩。此事令原井父子蒙受奇耻大辱，二人抗命不遵，藩主下令杀死原井父子。伊听闻此事与裕五郎殉情而死，原井三郎悲痛欲绝，带上孙女富出逃。路上竟遇当年为官时挚交——侍卫长建政（仲代达矢 饰），建政拒不放行，二人大战。原井杀死建政，自己却被早已埋伏于此的藩兵杀害。最后，富的奶娘在乱军之中救下孩子带走抚养。
